WELCOME TO SMPTE11

I recently read a review of our industry that cited the current state  as “pandemonium”, due to a proliferation of video content types, formats and profiles. Whilst I don’t disagree, I would also point to the rapid pace of change, the vagaries of business models, and economic machinations as also having a major impact. These are  interesting times, where you  need to consider the impact of mobile or OTT viewing on your production, or 3D projection and satellite delivery on your major motion picture.

However, the media and entertainment industry has always been built on technology, and yes we prefer standards, but when you have the power supply at one end of the scale and optical presentation at the other; with base band SDI and IP somewhere in the middle, there is always plenty of scope for discussion.

This highlights to me, that when making decisions about technology for your television network, cinema house, production facility, or content delivery network you don’t have the luxury of time to consider the next big purchase, and further, it will have to pay for itself rapidly.
